Martha Jane Werner

Martha Jane Werner, 98, of Dubuque, passed away, Thursday, October 23, 2014.

Committal Service will be at Linwood Cemetery, Mueller Chapel 11:30 a.m., Monday, October 27, 2014, conducted by Rev. Dr. Okitakoyi Lundula. Family will greet friends 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., Monday prior to services at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Rd., Dubuque.

Martha was born September 2, 1916 in Dubuque, the daughter of Frank and Lydia (Wirth) Werner. Martha lived her entire life in Dubuque. After graduation from Dubuque High School, she attended Bayless Business College. She was employed by Flexsteel for 52 years before retiring in 1991 as executive secretary. She was respected by all her co-workers and managers.

She was an avid reader. She enjoyed attending craft shows, the Dubuque Farmers Market, and taking trips with family and friends across the country, or just along the Mississippi to enjoy the view. Each generation of her nieces and nephews looked forward to a trip to see "Aunt Janie" and to ride the 4th Street Elevator, and have ice cream at the bottom of the hill. She took them to enjoy the view from Eagle Point Park, visit the River Museum, walk through the Arboretum, and watch for eagles fishing below the lock and dam. Many laughs were shared with her great nieces while playing Cooties.

Her windowsills were always blooming with beautiful African violets and Christmas cactus plants. When she was not able to tend her plants, they kept blooming due to the attention of a church friend, Marcia Dubbels.

Martha (Janie as the family called her) was a kind and gentle independent woman with a sly sense of humor. She actively enjoyed her life until a bad fall forced her to reluctantly enter assisted living. She loved her family unconditionally. And her patience was never ending. She was loved dearly and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Those left to cherish her memory include her nephew, William W. (Billie) Werner of St. Peters, MO; her niece, Barbara S. Meeker of Cedar Rapids, IA; three great nieces, Tara (Jim) Overschmidt, Julie (Eric) Tyrell, and Sebrina (Chad) Lucas; three great nephews, Zachary Overschmidt, and Ian and Gavin Lucas; and three great great nieces, Elizabeth Overschmidt, Tenley Lucas, and Reagan Tyrell.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother William F. (Ruth) Werner.

The family thanks the management and staff at Eagle Point Place in Dubuque for the care and comfort they provided to Martha for the past 2 years, and to Hospice of Dubuque for giving compassionate assistance in her final days. And a special thanks to Pat Roesner, Martha's best friend for 62 years, for helping her long distance family look after Martha's needs.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the music ministry at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Dubuque, IA, where she was a member.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hoffmannschneiderfuneral homes.com.
