Sudden Death

Hattie W. Van Pelt, daughter of Mrs. S. G. Van Pelt, was taken sick with scarlet fever on Saturday last and expired yesterday evening. She was eleven and one-half years old, and was greatly beloved by all who knew her. Her mother returned from Des Moines on Sunday, and was with her daughter in her last hours.
Death at any time is terrible, but when it strikes down a bright, particular bud, like Hattie, around which the tendrils of loving hearts seem to be in separately hastened, its coming is indeed most unwelcome. Hattie was just beginning to develop those traits which mark the transition from youth to girlhood, when the icy finger of death chilled her young heart, and blasted the hopes so fondly cherished by a loving mother.

“Oh! What a shadow o’er the heart is flung
When peals the requiem of the loved and young!
Ere yet dark years on the warm cheek has shed
Autumnal mildew o’er the rose like red.”
