Dies at Epworth; To
Be Buried Friday

Epworth, Ia. May 26 – Death claimed William H. H. Allen, 78, at his home here Wednesday evening at 7 o’clock after an illness of more than a year’s duration.Mr. Allen was a pioneer of Dubuque County, having moved west with his parents as a small child. He was born in Pennsylvania, May 3, 1849. He as one of nine children, all but one sister having preceded him in death.
Mr. Allen was married July 10, 1878, at Fairplay, Wis., to Miss Mary Smith of Epworth. To this union six children were born.
Besides his widow he is survived by four children; Mrs. Leonard "Anna" Hummel, Volga City; Mrs. Adeline Wall, Manchester; Robert B. Allen and Arnold R., of Epworth; one sister, Mrs. Mary Bradley, Flint, Mich., also 12 grandchildren. A daughter Jessie, preceded him in death in 1905, and an infant daughter in 1893.
Mr. Allen, or “Bill,” as he was commonly known to all of his friends, will be greatly missed as he has resided in Epworth for 23 years. Although in failing health for many months, his spirit was undaunted and whenever able he took his customed walk to town where he chatted for a while with the other “boys.”
Mr. Allen was janitor at Epworth School for many years and was popular with teachers and pupils because of his desire to please.
Funeral services will be held at the home Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
