Johan was born in Leudelange (Luxembourgish: Leideleng, German: Leudelingen), a commune and town in southwestern Luxembourg situated in the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette, in today's District of Luxembourg.

He married Katharina Siebenaler 16 Feb 1831, in Greiveldange, Stadtbredimus, Remich, Luxembourg. They were the parents of a number of children, with five known to reach adulthood. He emigrated from Luxembourg with his wife and children in 1850 arriving New York, NY from Antwerp, Belgium on July 17th aboard the ship 'Atlantic'. A month later the family was residing in Paris township, Kenosha County Wisconsin. He later relocated to Iowa. By 1854, Johan was residing in Liberty township, Dubuque County Iowa where he lived and farmed his remaining days.

Johan, also known as 'John', died in 1870 at the age of 63, survived by his wife Katharina and daughters Catherine "Kate", Magadelena "Lena", Maria "Mary", Anna Maria Elisabeth, and Catharine Elisabeth.
