AGED VETERAN PASSES AWAY
SUNDAY AFTER LONG
ILLNESS

DUBUQUE TELEGRAH HEARD
MONDAY, MARCH 30TH, 1914

Charles Anderson, a veteran of the Civil War, and a resident of this city for a half a century, passed away at the family residence, 779 Dodge Street, on Sunday afternoon at 5 o’clock. For nearly a year Mr. Anderson has been afflicted with cancer of the face and his death came after many months of patient suffering.

Mr. Anderson was a native of Ashlahult, Sweden where he was born January 16th, 1836. On coming to America he settled in New York where he remained three years, before coming to this city, which has since been his home. For the past forty-two years he has resided in the same house.

He was a member of Co. F. 74th Illinois Infantry, and served in that regiment during numerous engagements, while part of the Army of the Cumberland. After three years of faithful service for his adopted country, Mr. Anderson was honorably discharged at the close of the war. He had the distinction of being one of the oldest-Masons in the city, holding membership in Mosaic Lodge 125 A. F. and A. M., for fifty years, a record excelled by fed. He was also a member of Siloam Commandery, Knights Templar, and Hyde Clark Post, G. A. R.

He was united in marriage in this city to Miss Mary Adeline Wise on May 30, 1866. Three children born to the union preceded their father in death. Mrs. Anderson and an adopted daughter, Frances, mourn the death of a noble husband and father. A brother Otto Anderson resides in Overton, Nebr.

The close of the career of this useful citizen has cast a shadow of grief over innumerable of friends to whom his self-sacrificing life was an inspiration. In his early life Mr. Anderson followed the trade of tanner, but during his later years he was employed as a carpenter.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the family residence, Rev. Lemen to conduct the services at the home. The interment at Linwood will be under the auspices of the Masonic Fraternity and Grand Army.
