BERNARD, Iowa - Ellen Marie Shanahan, 77, 10986 Bellevue-Cascade Road, Bernard, died after a sudden illness Thursday evening, Feb. 19, 1998, at Mercy Health Center St. Joseph's Unit.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, rural Bernard, Iowa, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a parish wake service at 4 p.m.

She was born on April 7, 1920, in Garryowen, daughter of Jeremiah and Jane (Donovan) Meehan.

For 11 years, prior to her marriage, she was a school teacher in country schools in Jackson County. After her marriage to Donald Shanahan on June 1, 1949, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, they farmed his family farm. She continued to farm after his death on May 5, 1959.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, its rosary society and several area senior citizens groups. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family and her many friends.

Surviving are three sons, Ed Shanahan, of Manteno, Ill., and Raymond and David (Pearl) Shanahan, both of Bernard; two daughters, Monica (Steve) Maurer, of Decorah, Iowa, and Margaret Oberreuter, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and 10 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Theresa Boyer and Vivian Meehan.

In lieu of flowers, an Ellen M. Shanahan Memorial Fund has been established.
