Loras John Shanahan, 69, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at home following a sudden illness.

Funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Church, with Rev. Kyle Digmann officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2015, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 4:00 p.m. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

Loras was born on March 23, 1946, in Bernard, Iowa, the son of John and Isabell (Lammer) Shanahan. He married Mary Kay Steffen and later married Julie Johnson on July 24, 1991, in Dubuque, Iowa. She preceded him in death on September 11, 2014.

He worked for Dubuque John Deere for 30 years as a machinist and later at the Dubuque Driving Range. He served in Iowa National Guard from 1965 to 1967. He was a member of the UAW Local 94 and the Moose Lodge.

He was an avid Chicago Cub and Iowa Hawkeye fan, he enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Driving Range and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by three children, Kathy Shanahan, of Vancouver, British Columbia, Kevin (Jessica) Shanahan, and Krista (Mike) Torrey, all of Dubuque. Two step-sons, David (Becky) Haynes and Jason (Tina) Haynes, all of Dubuque. Nine grandchildren, Keighan, Nicholas, Crystal, Alli, Matthew, Trisha, C.J., Tia and Cody and two great grandchildren, Brycen and Brody. Siblings, Elaine (Jim) Hutchroft, of La Motte, Chuck (Mary) Shanahan, of Bernard, Paul (Arlene) Shanahan, of Maquoketa, Mary (George) Felderman, of La Motte. Brother-in-law Bob Timmerman, sister-in-law Ginny (Jerry) Heim and his former wife and special friend, Mary Kay Shanahan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a step daughter, Carrie, his wife, Julie, a sister, Ann, and a brother Pat.
