Francis J. Shanahan 1922-2002

Francis J. Shanahan, 80, of 230 Dillon St., died at 11:02 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at home surrounded by his family following a long illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 2 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 p.m.

Mr. Shanahan worked on the family farm and later he and his brother owned Shanahan Trucking. He then worked for Weber Motors in Cascade, and for Leo Hirtz at M&H Implement in Bernard. He also owned and operated several gas stations in the Dubuque area, including Zwingle, Iowa, and in Dubuque on Dodge Street, Rhomberg Avenue at the Point, and University Avenue for 26 years. After retirement he worked for Dubuque Bank and Trust as a courier for 15 years.

He was born on June 4, 1922, in South Garryowen, Iowa, son of Jeremiah and Mary (Donovan) Shanahan. He married Loretta O'Connell on Aug. 2, 1947, at St. Aloysius Church, South Garryowen.

He was a member of Power of Prayer and the Knights of Columbus Council 510. He was an avid long suffering Cubs fan.

Surviving are his wife, Loretta Shanahan, of Dubuque; three sons, Jack Shanahan and Mike Shanahan, both of Dubuque, and Bob (Becky) Shanahan, of Maquoketa, Iowa; two daughters, Jane (B.J.) Featherston, of Epworth, Iowa, and Julie Shanahan, of Dubuque; grandchildren, Tera, Bryan, Chris, Katie, Nick, Sam, Baylor, Macklin; and a great-grandchild, Madison.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Veronica; and a brother, Connie.

A Francis J. Shanahan Memorial Fund has been established.
