Cornelius J. "Connie" Shanahan, 84, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 2 Julien Dubuque Drive, died Thursday afternoon, April 30, 1998, at Mercy Health Center St. Joseph's Unit.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Raphael's Cathedral, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mr. Shanahan worked in the shipping department at the former Dubuque Packing Co., retiring in 1979.

He was born on Aug. 28, 1913, in Garryowen, Iowa, son of Jeremiah and Mary (Donovan) Shanahan. He married Estelle L. Melloy on June 14, 1938, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fillmore, Iowa.

He was a member of St. Raphael's Cathedral and the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 150A.

Surviving are his wife, Estelle L. Shanahan, of Dubuque; four daughters, Marie Shanahan, of Silverthorne, Colo., Barb (Randy) McPhail, of Grand Junction, Colo., Debra (Jon) Gaschler, of Casper, Wyo., and Joanne (Evan) Carruthers, of Grand Junction; eight sons, Jerry (Marilyn) Shanahan and Tom (Mary) Shanahan, both of Dubuque, Niel Shanahan, of Dayton, Ohio, Jim (Connie) Shanahan, of Phoenix, Ariz., Richard (Shelly) Shanahan, of Springville, Iowa, Steve (Gilly) Shanahan, of Bettendorf, Iowa, Phil (Kim) Shanahan, of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Bill (Maureen) Shanahan, of Swisher, Iowa; 27 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Francis (Loretta) Shanahan, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Suzanne; his parents; and a sister, Theresa.
