Thomas J. Shanahan, 75, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, June 16th, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, after a fall at home.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20th, 2016, at the Church of the Nativity, with Rev. James Miller officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, June 19th, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where a wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Family and friends may also gather after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church until time of Mass.
Tom was born on October 21, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa, the 2nd child of thirteen, to Cornelius and Estelle (Melloy) Shanahan. He married Mary Donovan on August 25, 1962, at Immaculate Conception Church in Kieler, WI.
He worked for Dubuque John Deere retiring in 1995 after 30 years, and was a member of the UAW Local 94. After retirement Tom worked for Hartig Drug for eight years delivering medication.
Tom enjoyed playing pool, was an avid outdoorsman, liked to hunt, cut wood, enjoyed fishing and watching baseball or indulging in a good game of euchre; but his greatest passion was trapshooting and was a lifetime member of the ATA. He was well decorated and received multiple state trapshooting awards.
He is survived by his loving family, his wife, Mary; three sons, Dean (Michelle) Shanahan, of Dubuque, Gary Shanahan, of Dubuque, and Daniel (Melody) Shanahan, of Janesville, WI; five grandchildren, Derek, Nicole, Alison, Ally and Avery. His siblings, Jerry (Marilyn) Shanahan, Neil Shanahan, Jim (Connie) Shanahan, Marie (Jerry Willey) Shanahan, Richard (Shelley) Shanahan, Phil Shanahan, Bill (Maureen) Shanahan, Barb (Randy) McPhail, Deb Gaschler, Joanne Shanahan. Sister-in-law, Gilley Shanahan and brother-in-law, Jerry Donahue, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Suzanne Donahue and Steve Shanahan.
In lieu of flowers a Thomas Shanahan memorial fund will be established.
The family wishes to thank the Dubuque Fire and EMS, Finley Hospital Emergency Room, Med Flight Services, and to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics for all their care and kindness.
