Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, IA) — Tuesday, October 14, 1997

Robert LeRoy Parkin, 71, of 2105 Kniest St., died early Monday morning, Oct. 13, 1997, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St. Burial will be in Rockdale Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Bob was a 20-year veteran, serving with the Navy during World War II as a catapult operator on the USS Forrestal and the USS Enterprise aircraft carriers. The USS Forrestal was the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. He traveled all over the world during his tour of duty and met many dignitaries. He later worked at Flexsteel Industries for 20 years until his retirement in 1987.

He was born March 24, 1925, in Dubuque, son of Willard and Frances (Martelle) Parkin.

He enjoyed watching any kind of sports.

Surviving are two sisters, Dolores VanNett, of Hart, Mich.; and Carol A. Davis, of Dubuque; a brother, John W. (Mary) Parkin, of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Eugene (Phyllis) Baumhover, in 1978.

A Robert L. Parkin Memorial Fund has been established.
