JEROME SCOFIELD SLEEPS HIS LAST SLEEP

Early Monday morning Jerome Scofield dropped asleep nevermore to awaken this side of eternity. For some four or five years his brain seemed diseased, and a few week before his death, softening of the brain set in when the merciful Father called him home. Mr. Scofield was more than 71 years of age being born in Duchtess County, New York in October 1814. On the 11th of April 1837, he was married to Miss Van Voorhees, of the same county, who survives him. Two sons were reared by them, one Leben-, now residing in Los Angeles, Cal., and James who died in this county some 17 or 18 years ago, leaving a widow, Mrs. Frankie Scofield and two children. Mr. and Mrs. Scofield came to Clinton 35 years ago, and for years Mr. Scofield was engaged in the lumber business in this city, being connected with the Clinton Lumber Company when the late A. P. Hosford was president of it, and at one time he owned an interest in a saw mill in Dubuque. For some reason Mr. Scofield was unfortunate in business, though an actively pushing, energetic business man, and it was his loses that disturbed his mind and hastened his death.

For years no name in Clinton was better known than Jerome Scofield. He knew everybody, and everybody seemed to think well of him. Up to the time of his failing health he took an active part in politics in both city and county. In New York State he was also quite prominently identified with local politics, and if we are unmistaken, he held a responsible position in the New York Custom House during Buchanan’s administration. Mr. Scofield was one of the most generous hearted men that ever lived. Could he have possessed the means he would have devoted his time to acts of charity. Before he came to Iowa a brother died leaving a large family of children. Jerome took the family in his own house, educated them and gave them a home until they could earn their own living. While Mr. Scofield was set in his ways and had his own opinions of things, he was in every respect an excellent citizen. Though he died in Lyons, his home, until within three or four years had been in Clinton. He was a member of the Methodist Church, from which church in this city funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon. A large concourse of citizens were in attendance and many sincere mourners, aside from the immediate relatives followed the remains to Springdale Cemetery, where all that was mortal of Jerome Scofield will rest for ever more.
