John I. Mullany Dies

Dubuque, March 11 – John I. Mullany, prominent local attorney, and regent of Dubuque College, died at his home here Sunday after a recent illness. His wife and one daughter were at this bedside. Another daughter Miss Blanche of Des Moines and a son Marc, of Iowa City, arrived in the city yesterday morning. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning.Mr. Mullany had the distinction of being the only remaining acolyte of the famous Bishop Loras, who, with Bishop Smyth, taught him the classics. He completed his education at the University of Niagara, N. Y.
He was usually active in Catholic Church circles and was known throughout the archdiocese of Dubuque. He contributed article frequently to the Catholic Quarterly, the Catholic Encyclopedia and current magazines. His translation from the French of the life of Julien Dubuque is regarded as a masterpiece.
