Dubuque Daily Herald, July 1, 1901

Miss Nellie Madigan, aged 32 years, passed away yesterday afternoon at 5:30 o’clock at Mercy Hospital with an illness of four week with appendicitis. This announcement will be read with regret by the many friends of the deceased and her family. While it was quite generally known that she was in critical condition those who watched over her thought that her crisis had passed, and that she was on a fair road to recovery. A second operation was necessary, however, and from the effects of this she failed to rally. Miss Madigan was the daughter of the late James Madigan, who for many years was a prosperous farmer at the monastery. She was also a niece of the late Father Alberic of the monastery. During her residence in this city the deceased made many warm friends by her genial whole souled disposition. She was ever ready to lend assistance to those in distress and her bright cheery presence made her a favorite wherever she went. The bereft family has the heartfelt sympathy of the community in their loss.

Four sisters, Mary, Delia, Agnes and Josie, and two brothers Alberic and James survive the deceased. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 8:30 o’clock to the monastery.
