~
The many friends of ex Mayor Adam F. Jaeger were most disagreeably surprised yesterday morning to hear that he was Iying at his home in a very critical condition. Mr. Jaeger, with several friends, has been up the river camping for several weeks, and every messenger from the camp brought only the most agreeable news, and Mr. Jaeger in
particular has been reported as feeling in more than ordinary good spirits and enjoying the outing more than all the others. Sunday he had a slight attack of cholera morbus, from which he apparently
recovered. Tuesday evening he was again attacked with cramps, and his condition became so alarming that at 2 o'clock in the morning friends started to bring him home. He arrived here at about six o'clock and Dr. Staples was summoned. For a while his life was dispaired of and at different times yesterday he was reported dying. Yesterday afternoon, however, he showed signs of slight improvement.

His physician called an hour after supper and found him still improving with everything to indicate his recovery. About 10 o'clock a relapse occurred and the physician was again summoned. In spite of his efforts the patient sank rapidly int unconsciousness and at 1:40 expired. His entire family and a number of intimate friends were at his bedside when dissolution occurred.

Mr. Jaeger was born in Hesse Darmstadt on the Rhine, Feb. 27, 1838, making him now 58 years of age. His parents emigrated to America one year later and in 1840 settled in Dubuque being among our earliest settlers. Mr. Jaeger has spent his whole life in this city, here he received his education and grew to manhood engaged in business. For a long period of years he was in partnership with L. A. Rhomberg. Of late years he has been associated with Mr. L. A. Lang under the firm
name of Jaeger, Lang & Co., in the wholesale liquor business. In 1859 he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Schaffner of West Dubuque, who now survives him. Besides his widow he leaves five children,
Henry, Antoine, Charles, Alphons, and Martin. He has held the office of mayor and has served nine years in the council.

Mr. Jaeger was truly one of God's noblemen. He was the soul of geniality, kind-hearted and ever charitable and pleasant. In his business dealings he has made an enviable reputation. Honesty and
integrity have been characteristic of him and few men possessed the esteem and warm friendship of his associates as he did.

He has ever been a public spirited man.
