PASSING OF A PIONEER
~
Mrs. Mary A. Johnson, One of
Dubuque’s Earliest Settlors
Passes Away
~
The passing away of Mrs. Mary A. Johnson removes from our midst one of the oldest settlors in the city of Dubuque. Mrs. Johnson was 87 years of age and resided here for sixty years. She was born in Kentucky and was the widow of Samuel Johnson, one of the most prominent business men in the early history of the city. For almost half a century the Johnson family consisting of Mrs. Johnson and daughter, Miss Maria, have resided on West Fourteenth Street.

The deceased, although in advanced years, was singularly active and not until a few days ago was she confined to her room. Death resulted from an attack of the grip which quickly developed in pneumonia.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of St. Luke’s Church for many years. She was a woman who devoted her life to her family. Possessed of a good heart, her kindness towards her neighbors made her an ideal friend. The surviving members of the family whom there are but two, Mrs. James Rollins of Helena, Mont. and Miss Maria, have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
