A SAD DEATH
~
YOUNG WOMAN FROM SIOUX CITY
DIED AT MERCY HOSPITAL
SATURDAY
~
LITTLE KNOWN OF HER HISTORY
~
No Friends Present at Her
Funeral – Was Young and Pretty
~
A young life ended at one of the local charitable institutions Saturday under circumstances most sad. It was the denouement of a history which, if known, would make the tears well up from the hardest hearts.

It was the case of a young girl-beautiful even in death. She came to Dubuque to hide her shame –to cover up the perfidy of some wretch too low to bear that manhood bestows.

The young woman became a mother. That was January 22nd. The little one did not live long- it died a few days later.

Then the mother hovered between life and death. Her shame was hard to bear. It seemed as if it was too heavy. This proved true, for on Saturday last she breathed her last.

Little else is known of the sad story. What remains to be told can be related briefly.

The funeral took place. That it was sad need not be said. No kith or kin stood round her bier, no childhood friend breathed forth a prayers, the heavy clots of earth fell heavily on her flowerless casket.

The memory of the sad death and burial will not die. It will be kept alive, to show in inhumanity of man. In the city hall a death certificate reposes in a strong vault. It tells but little but it discloses that the young mother’s name was Mary DeVory, that she was 27 years old; that she came from Sioux City. In the place where the father’s name should appear are the cold words, “not reported.”
