John J. "Jack" Zillig 1937-2009

EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. - John J. "Jack" Zillig, 71, of 543 W. Heller Drive, East Dubuque, died at 7:34 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dubuque. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque, where military honors will be accorded by members of the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, where there will be a parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on June 24, 1937, in Dubuque, son of Joseph and Alvera (Fluhr) Zillig. He was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, class of 1955.

He married Barbara McCaffery on Jan. 24, 1959, at Sacred Heart Church.

He was a veteran of the Army, serving from 1960 to 1962, at Fort Hood, Texas.

Jack was employed at the John Deere Dubuque Works for 35 years, retiring as a supervisor. He later was employed by the Diamond Jo Casino.

He was the senior member of the Jo Daviess County Board representing Dunleith Township Precinct No. 2. He and Barb were active members at Sacred Heart Church, working bingo and festivals for many years.

Jack loved the river. He was a competitive swimmer and diver. He enjoyed fishing, pheasant hunting, golfing and bowling, plus his many trips to Laughlin, Nev., and the casinos. He was a Cleveland Indians and Dallas Cowboys fan. Since 1981, Jack loved playing his role as Santa Claus for many tri-state area organizations, residents and children's functions.

Surviving are his wife, Barb; a son, Jon Scott (Kelly) Zillig, of East Dubuque; a daughter, Kerri (Kevin) Lynn, of Dubuque; two brothers, Charles "Chuck" (Nancy) Zillig, of Dubuque, and Donald (Kay) Zillig, of East Dubuque; a sister, Joyce (Robert) MacFarlane, of Champaign; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, June Noonan; and a brother, Richard "Stub" Zillig.
