SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Thomas M. Flynn, 79, of Scottsdale, formerly of Dubuque, died Thursday, May 29, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 2, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at the church, where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on Jan. 9, 1929, in Dubuque. He graduated from the Loras Academy and attended Iowa State University before enlisting in the armed forces. He was a veteran of the Korea Conflict, having served in the Army. He married Mary Heim on Dec. 26, 1953, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

Tom enjoyed a successful career in the concrete and aggregate business spanning 60 years, participating in the activities of the Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin Ready-Mix Concrete Associations. His enthusiasm for the industry was built upon the many friendships he enjoyed throughout his career.

He was chairman emeritus and past president of the Flynn Ready-Mix Concrete Company, past member of the board of directors of the Northeast Iowa Council Boy Scouts of America, past president of the Iowa Ready-Mix Concrete Association, past board member of the National Ready-Mix Concrete Association and Director Emeritus of Dubuque Bank & Trust.

He also was a past City of Dubuque Planning and Zoning Commissioner, president of Heritage Manor, president and current member of the 990 Club of Dubuque Shooting Society, member of Dubuque Home Builders Association and a passionate numismatist and former member of the Professional Currency Dealers Association.

Tom was an avid card player and sportsman who always enjoyed hooking a big fish!

Surviving are his wife, Mary of Scottsdale; his four sons, Thomas L. and Jane Flynn, of Epworth, Iowa, and their son, Tommy, Steven and June Flynn, of Maquoketa, Iowa, and their children, Katherine and Megan, David and Mary Flynn, of Monroe, Wis., and their children, Matthew and Daniel, Paul and Angela Flynn, of Galena, Ill., and their children, Max, Chandler, Charlotte and Mason.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents and father.
