MR. F. M. MENGIS BREATHES HIS LAST
AT HALF PAST 2 O'CLOCK
YESTERDAY AFTERNOON

The death of Mr. F. M. Mengis occurred a half past two o'clock yesterday afternoon at the family residence, No. 890 Main Street. Mr. Mengis was a great sufferer, and for the past five years his illness had been of such a burden as to totally keep him from business, consumption was the cause of his death. He breathed his last surrounded by his weeping wife and children at the hour mentioned above. Mr. Mengis was born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1837. He came to this country with his father in 185?, and landed first in Orleans where his father engaged in the drug business, assisted by his son. Mr. Mengis went to Tell, Ind., where he started in the drug business for himself. While living there he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Webber a native of the city of Luzerne, Switzerland. Mr. and Mrs. Mengis came to Dubuque in 189? and engaged in the millinery business, which they have successfully conducted since. Mrs. Mengis has had sole charge of the store since her husbands long illness. Mr. Mengis leaves a wife and five children. They are Paula, ?, Herbert, Walter and Lessing, the youngest being five years of age; besides he leaves two brothers and four sisters, all of whom are living in the United States. Mr. Mengis was respected by many friends; he was a warm-heated, intelligent gentlemen, and to his family he was greatly attached. During his residence in this city he took as prominent part in German theatrical and often appeared upon the stage in difficult parts, which he successfully portrayed. As an actor he had few equals, and upon many occasions he assisted the local amateurs in producing a play, the proceeds of which were donated to a charitable purpose. Mr. Mengis was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, and the funeral, which will occur on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, will be conducted by the Masonic Lodge of this city. The remains will be interned at Linwood Cemetery.
