OBITUARY

On the night of the 10th inst., at the hour of 11 o'clock, Mark Murphy departed this life at his residence on the corner of 15th and Clay Streets. His death was not wholly unexpected, and has for sometime been suffering from consumption. The deceased was born in the County Kilkenney Ireland, and emigrated therefrom at the age of nineteen. Arriving at St. Louis in the year 1834, he engaged in the business of wholesale grocery with Mr. P. Walsh as partner, in which business he continued during four years, when his partner died. After his partners death he lived for sometime in St. Louis as a general contractor. In 1851, he was married to Miss Susan Cooney, and by the advise of Drs. Rogers and O'Reilly, in 1852 he removed to this city. Here he engaged in the grocery business and pursued a course of conduct that endeared him to a very extensive circle of friend. His manners were prepossessing but plain. In his dealing he was frank and wholly free from equivocation. In his friendships he was uniform but firm. Few men knew him who did not admire his consistent regard for truth and principal and his undisguised contempt for those who would descend to anything not in strict accordance with truth and honor. He died as he believed, a consistent member of the Catholic Church, in the midst of a large circle of devoted friends. His loss will be much felt in the community, for he enjoyed not only the confidence of his friends but the respect of all classes, on account of the virtues and high toned integrity that marked his career. He leaves a fond wife and five children to mourn his untimely death.

May his soul, from all earthly cares be free
To God's holy presence, stainless go
To aught ungodly he ne'er bent the knee,
Always pleased to ease the orphans woe.
