Dubuque Democratic Herald – June 4, 1865

DEATH OF A. CUMMINS – Our readers will be pained to learn of the death of Andrew Cummins, Mr. Cummins was born in the County of Carlow, Ireland, in the 1819, and emigrated to this country in 1850, and settled in Galena, Illinois. In 1856, he removed to Dubuque, where he has since carried on a successful business.

In all the transactions of his life he pursued the same straightforward, and honorable course, and few men in any community enjoyed a higher reputation for strict integrity and many amiable virtues.

A kind and loving husband and father, a sincere friend, a devout and practical Christian, his loss will be severely felt by a beareved wife and a large family of children, and an extensive circle of family and friends. Those only were who acquainted with him knew how to appreciate his many “noble” qualities of head and heart.

Mr. Cummins was a devoted Catholic and received in his dying hours all the consolation which the church could bestow on her worthy children. He was also one of the officers of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and was ever foremost in promoting objects of charity.

He expired peacefully about 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, exemplifying in his death as well as in his life, all the characteristics of a good Christian and a good man. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his untimely end. His remains will be conveyed to the Catholic cemetery in Key West for interment, this afternoon at 2 o’clock.
