Dubuque Democratic Herald – Dec. 5, 1864

A Fatal Accident – On Tuesday of last week, Mr. James Moore met with an accident that yesterday resulted in his death. Mr. Moore was hauling wood, and when near the corner of Iowa Street, on First, his team showed symptoms of balkiness’, whereupon he placed his shoulder to the wheel in order to lighten the load in passing over a difficult portion of the road. The horses began to fly back, and caught a portion of Mr. Moore’s arm between the wheel and the bed of the wagon, crushing it and tearing the flesh from the muscle from it in a horrible manner. The wound would not heal, notwithstanding the upmost skill of the physician in attendance, and erysipelas setting in Mr. Moore was relieved from his suffering by death yesterday, at 2 o’clock P. M. His loss will be severely felt by his family. He was a good citizen, and upright man, and respected by all who knew him. The funeral will take place on Monday at 9 ˝ o’clock from the residence on the corner of 15th and Jackson Streets.
