The remains of Capt. Samuel S. Newbury, of the 12th U. S. Infantry, arrived yesterday morning from Washington and conveyed to the residence of his brother-in-law, Austin Adams. He was killed in the battle near City Point on the 19th ult, and his body afterward recovered, embalmed and sent home. It has not yet been definitely determined when the funeral services will be celebrated, but probably not before Sunday, it being necessary to await the arrival of friends from Detroit. Capt. Newbury was well known in town and as highly esteemed as he was well known and we entertain no doubt; his funeral service will be largely attended.

Funeral of Capt. Newbury – The funeral service of Capt. Samuel S. Newbury will be held this afternoon at 3 o’clock, at the Second Presbyterian Church, corner of Locust and 13th Streets. His father arrived from Clayton County on Friday and other members from the East last night. After services the remains will be interned at Linwood Cemetery.

We doubt not that there will be a large attendance at the funeral, for Capt. Newbury was a long time of resident of Dubuque, and was well and popularly known. He was a young man of the first order of intellect; he stood at the head of his class in college, and when admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Michigan was especially complimented by the Judges for superior evinced. Brave, generous, and talented, he was one whom the world could ill afford to lose, but such are the ones who are singled out for the “shinning mark” and (the bottom section of this article is ripped away.)
