Dubuque Democratic Herald – Aug. 3, 1864

Sudden Death – Yesterday a private dispatch was received from Cairo stating that W. Brush, of this city, formerly of Dyersville, died suddenly at Vicksburg and that his body was enroute to relatives in this city, and would arrive this evening for internment. He was a soldier in an Illinois regiment, and was a young man of much promise and highly respected for his gentlemanly bearing and social qualities. His sisters are distracted to learn of his sudden demise, and the loss of a brother.
