Dubuque Democratic Herald – Feb. 3, 1864

Death of “Yankee” – There are but few of our readers in this city who would not remember Joseph Hayden, better known as “Yankee,” an eccentric individual who use to peddle nuts, apples and other articles about town a year or two ago, and finally went to Waterloo where he was discovered dead in bed last Sunday morning from the effects of a dose of poison, probably administrated by himself, at least such was an opinion by a post mortem examination. We learn that he was about town on Saturday.

He was well educated, having taught school in this county, and could make a good stump speech. He came here some eight years ago from Illinois.
