Dubuque Democratic Herald – Feb. 2, 1864

Another early settler of Dubuque has departed. Mrs. Ellen Dunn, wife of Patrick Dunn, died on Sunday, Jan. 31st, aged 60 years. She and her husband were among the first settlers of Dubuque, having come here in 1834, soon after their emigration from Ireland. At that time, after the first year of permanent settlement of Dubuque, the hardships of the pioneers are but little appreciated by those who, for twenty years past, have found a city built by the enterprise like those of Mr. and Mrs. Dunn, and several hundred others, who labored here then and for ten years afterwards, to prepare the way for all the prosperity that has since been achieved. Honor is due to the living representatives of the early times of Iowa and a reverend memory due to each of them as they depart this life to meet the reward of the earthly work well done.

The funeral service will take place today at 2 o’clock. The procession will proceed from the residence over the store of J. H. Dunn, on First, between Main and Locust Streets, to the Cathedral where the funeral service will be held. A large assemblage of acquaintances of the family and sympathizing friends will be present to show their respect for the family and the memory of the deceased. The remains will be taken to Key West for burial.
