The Dubuque Herald, Jan. 6, 1885

The herald last Sunday contained a brief notice of the death of Mr. John Hayes Jr. but at the time gave no extended obituary. Deceased was a son of City Weighmaster Hayes, and at the time of his death was 21 years and seven months old. He had been sick two years, and at last fell victim to that worst of disease, consumption. Around the bedside of the dying man were anxious friends and relatives who gave him every possible attention all to no purpose. Mr. Hayes was a most exemplary young man. He was born and raised here and received his education in our schools. He was honest and upright in all his dealings, and had a disposition that especially endeared him to all his acquaintances.

He was employed for a long time in the mill of Standard Lumber Co., and remained at work until forced to stop by the sickness which caused his death. The afflicted parents have the sincere sympathy of all their friends in this most sad affliction. This is the second death that has occurred in the family in a little over a year, a promising young daughter having been snatched away about a year ago. One daughter and three sons are still left to comfort the sorrowing parents.

Of the sons one is Mr. P. H. Hayes, formerly city editor of the Herald, but editor and proprietor of a paper in Montana. He will hardly arrive in time for the funeral, which takes place from the family residence, corner of Fourteenth and Prairie Streets at 9 o’clock this morning to St. Patrick’s Church, and thence to Key West Cemetery, where the remains will be laid to rest.
