Nicholas Backes

Death summoned Nicholas Backes who had been ill for the past six months, at the Mercy hospital this morning at 1:15 o'clock.

The remains have been removed from the Strueber chapel to the home 2902 Pennsylvania avenue, from where the funeral will be held Friday morning to St. Anthony's church at 9 o'clock. Interment will be made in Mt. Calvary cemetery.

Mr. Backes was born in Rickardsville, August 7, 1868 and was married in Fillmore to Catherine Maurer, who with six daughters, Mrs. Henry Lange, Holy Cross; Mrs. Louis O'Here, Bankston; Misses Alberta, Stella, Berniece and Cecelia Backes, all of this city; four sons Melvin, Rickardsville; Leo, LeRoy and Lester, Dubuque; a brother John, Altamont, Kan., and a sister, Mrs. Mary Sherman, Bloomington, Cal., survives him.

He resided on a farm near Rickardsville until five years ago, when he moved to Dubuque.

Being a devout Catholic, a member of St. Anthony's parish, he was comforted in his last hour by the rites of that religion.
