SHORT ILLNESS: FUNERAL
TUESDAY MORNONG
~
Mrs. Sarah Maher, 73, widow of Martin Mahar died at Mercy Hospital Sunday afternoon at 4:20 o’clock after an illness of one week.

The funeral will be held Tuesday morning from the residence of her son Richard, 1410 Iowa Street, to St. Raphael’s Cathedral where a requiem high mass will be read at 9 o’clock. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Mrs. Mahar resided in Dubuque and the county, at Otter Creek, practically her entire life. She was born in New York City, Dec. 10, 1852, and when an infant brought to Dubuque County by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Dorsey, who settled on a farm at Otter Creek. She was married at Otter Creek to Martin Mahar and resided there until about 30 years ago when the family moved to Dubuque when Mr. and Mrs. Martin Mahar purchased the Montana House which they operated. Her husband died Feb. 18, 1904, and for a number of years after his death his widow continued to operate the hotel.

Mrs. Mahar was a lifelong member of the Catholic faith and died comforted by the last rites of her religion. During all her residence in Dubuque she was an attendant of St. Raphael’s Cathedral and a member of the rosary society and the League of the Sacred Heart of the parish.

Mrs. Mahar was widely known in the city and the county, the hotel which she formerly operated in the south end of the city, in former days before the advent of the automobile, being one of the most popular of the hotels patronized by farmers and their families. Her devotion to her family and her splendid character won her the friendship and admiration with those of which she whom became acquainted.

Mrs. Mahar is survived by one daughter Mrs. Agnes McCully, Chicago; four sons, William, Carroll, Nebr.; Michael, Waterloo; and Richard and Edward, Dubuque; one sister, Mrs. Edward McClain, Dubuque; and several grandchildren. Three sons and one daughter preceded her in death.
