Death of an Old Citizen
~
James B. Kittle, of Whitewater Township, Dubuque County, died on the 5th of May, after an illness of about six weeks duration. The deceased was born in Lancaster County, state of Pennsylvania, and was about 74 years of age. He emigrated to Galena in 1826, and settle in Dubuque in 1833 and has resided in Dubuque ever since. He located upon his farm in Whitewater Township in 1838 and resided there until the day of his death. He was in the regular army in 1819 and in that year visited the locality on which the city of Dubuque now stands.

The deceased was an old pioneer – one of the men of iron nerve and indomitable will that belongs to the class who had fortitude, courage and endurance to plunge into the wilderness, isolate themselves from society, take their lives into their hands, face danger and endure privation for the purpose of opening up the way and smoothing down the unfriendly elements, so as to render things more congenial to their more timid brothers, to come after them.

We of the present day know but little of the real value of the service rendered for the millious of the population that has spread over the great Mississippi valley, we realize nothing of the danger and privation to which they were exposed.

The deceased was a useful member of society, a good neighbor, well respected citizen, kind hearted, always ready to assist, obliging and hospitable, exhibiting in a marked degree those high social qualities always so prominent in the class of men to whom be belong.
