Death of Fred Lear

The public were yesterday surprised to learn of the death of Fred Lear, which event took place at his residence, in the 3rd Ward, Friday morning. Mr. Lear had been sick but eight or nine days; the disease with which he was attacked, typhoid fever, assumed violent form from the first, and it soon became apparent there was little hope of saving life. He leaves a wife and a large number of children.

Mr. Lear was born in Prussia, near Berlin; he came to this country in 18?7, settling in Dubuque, and establishing himself at his trade, that of harness maker, which business he followed for many years.

During the Franco-Prussian War no man in Dubuque manifested warmer sympathies for the Prussians then did Mr. Lear; in fact the war so engrossed his attention that his associates and friends with one accord gave him the name "Bismarck."

Mr. Lear’s political sympathies were strongly with the Democratic Party; with them he always worked and always voted. At the primary meeting in his Ward, Sept. 2d, he took active part, and was placed on the delegation to repress the ward in the county convention. When that day came he was unable to take his seat in the convention, and now has gone to that land where it is hoped political strifes never enter. As a member of Schiller Lodge Odd Fellows, he always bore prominent part, and had advanced to the highest degree. The rules of that order his family will receive $800 from the fund established for this purpose. In addition to this timely aid, the family will receive $1500, the amount he was said to have insured on his life.

The Odd Fellows have charge of the funeral, notice of which is given in another place.
