INSANITY
~
An Insane Pauper Killed by
Leaping from a Window
~
On Friday of last week, Martin Gasser, an Austrian, who had been in the city but a short time, was taken to the poor house, being sick and unable to properly provide for himself. He seemed to be wandering in mind, at times, but this was attributed to his illness. During the night time, especially, he was restless wandering about in a singular manner. Friday and Saturday night, at the poor house, he disturbed other inmates by his singular conduct, and it was thought best to restrain him. He was therefore closely watched, but the guard was not so strictly that he was prevented from leaping from the window of his room to the pavement below. His room was in the attic, three and a half stories high. He fell upon his neck and face, both wrists were broken, his jaw badly broken, and skull fractured, besides internal injuries received which must have proved fatal. When he was found he was totally extinct.

Coroner Cantillon was notified and held an inquest, resulting in a verdict in accordance with the facts we have given.
