SHERRILL, Iowa - Velma Mae Hammerand, 92, of 20220 Kruse Lane, Sherrill, died Sunday, July 3, 2005, at Luther Manor, Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Dubuque. Burial will be in St. Matthew Cemetery, Sherrill. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, Dubuque. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

She was born on May 24, 1913, in Colesburg, daughter of William and Ella (Jung) Hartbecke.

She graduated from the Colesburg (Iowa) High School in 1932, and taught in the Dubuque county schools after her graduation.

She married John W. Hammerand on March 9, 1935, in Colesburg; he died on Sept. 6, 1984.

She farmed on the family farm since 1938 and lived there until February 2005.

She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Sherrill, where she taught Sunday school for many years.

She enjoyed quilting, embroidering, gardening, canning, baking and raising chickens. Her family was the most important thing in her life.

Surviving are four sons, Martin (Norma Jean) Hammerand, of Dubuque, David (Carol) Hammerand and Arlan (Midge) Hammerand, both of Sherrill, and Walter (Dorothy) Hammerand, of Lancaster, Wis.; three daughters, Joan (Blackie) Waller, of Dubuque, Gloria (Doug) Lenhart, of Zwingle, and Alice (Donald) Welter, of Bankston; 30 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Rhoda Von Talge, of Manchester; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hartbeck, of Lebanon, Mo.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, in infancy; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Louis and Floyd Hartbeck; and a sister, Hulda Hamerand.

A Velma Hammerand Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Luther Manor for their loving care.
