Merlin W. Hammel, 66, of 3412 Dove St., died at 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at ManorCare Health Services.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Sherrill, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Matthew's Lutheran Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Locust Street Funeral Home, 1145 Locust St., and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Hammel was a parts manager at Tegler's Garage for 37 years and an assistant parts manager at Shike-Richardson for seven years.

He was born on Aug. 14, 1933, in Dubuque, son of Christian and Edna (Hammerand) Hammel. He married Jean Oneyear in 1953; she died on Jan. 26, 1979.

He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School and was an Army veteran, having served in Alaska. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Sherrill, and a former member of the Sherrill Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving are a son, Stephen (Gloria) Hammel, of Monroe, Wis.; two daughters, Michele Hammel and Sarah Hammel, both of Dubuque; his parents, Christian (and stepmother, Marie) Hammel, of Sherrill; a brother, Floyd (Rose Ann) Hammel, of Sherrill; a special friend, Marie Junk, of Dubuque; and his grandchildren, Michael, Christian and Georgeanne Hammel, all of Monroe.

He also was preceded in death by his mother, Edna.

In lieu of flowers, a Merlin W. Hammel Memorial Fund has been established.
