SKETCH OF DECEASED
~
Mr. Richard Corcoran was a native Irishman who was born in Tipperary, Balangarry County Ireland, in the year 1812, he being 58 years old at the time of his death. He was the son of a wealthy Irish farmer, and up to the time of his emigrating to America in 1847 he stayed with his relatives aiding his father in agricultural pursuit, leading a quiet and needful life at home. In 1847, he like thousands of his countrymen before an since became smitten with the desire to come to America and taste the freedom of the “country that lies beyond the sea” and shipped himself ? port on our ? , and arrived in ?, made his way to St. Louis where he ? in the large stone quarries of Gen. M. A. Hogan, with whom he remained during his stay in that city.

At the end of five years he left St. Louis and came to Dubuque and has resided here ever since. During the last twelve years he has been in the employ of the Illinois Central railroad company, distributing freight, and has always been in repute as a good man and useful citizen. He is a relative of Aid? Ryan of our city, to whom we are indebted for the facts we have concerning him. He has but few connections in this country besides Aid, Ryan; he has a brother somewhere in Kentucky, of whose whereabouts there, nothing was ever learned; and a niece at Lansing, in this State. Since the death of his wife the 8th of January last, he has lived single. Some of his relatives in the Mother country, are reported to be very wealthy as were ? of his wife, the majority of whom are across the ocean. The funeral obsequies of the deceased took place at the Cathedral, Thursday morning, and his remains were conveyed to Key West for internment.

P. S. Note: The newspaper article was in poor shape so many words are missing.
