Alfred E. Melchert, 72, of Hopkinton, died Wednesday evening, Oct. 2, 2002, in his home following a sudden illness. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Luke's Catholic Church. Burial: Hopkinton Cemetery, with military honors. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Goettsch Funeral Home, Hopkinton, with a Scripture service at 8 p.m. The Rev. Father John Kramer will officiate.

Surviving are his wife, Ramona; six children, David (Cheryl) Melchert of Maynard, Doug (Lynne) Melchert, Chuck (Becky) Melchert and Gary Melchert, all of Hopkinton, Nancy (Jeff) Uden, of Hudson and Stan Melchert of Davenport; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and two brothers, Clifford (Katie) Melchert of Cedar Rapids and Vernon (Therese) Melchert of Hopkinton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clarence and Harold; and two sisters, Marie Recker and Laura Melchert.

Alfred Ernest Melchert was born Dec. 20, 1929, the son of Matthew and Elizabeth Uhlenkamp Melchert. He received his education in the Brooks School near his home. Al worked at Johnson Feed Mill before he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on Oct. 8, 1951. He was discharged on Oct. 6, 1953. Alfred E. Melchert and Ramona Bacon were married Nov. 4, 1953, at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Hopkinton.

Al operated a cream route and later a milk route in the Hopkinton area. He returned to work at Johnson Feed Mill before he started farming in South Fork Township. For 27 years, Al represented Pioneer Seed Corn, a job he truly loved. He retired in 1992. Al was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church and the Lions Club. He was a past commander of the Hopkinton American Legion and served on the Delaware County Veterans Commission. Al also helped start the Hopkinton Meal Service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

The Scripture service will be provided by the parish and military honors by the Hopkinton American Legion.
