BANKSTON, Iowa - Elmer L. Engelken, 76, of 25005 New Vienna Road, (Epworth) Bankston, died at 10:45 p.m. Monday, March 21, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

In accordance with Elmer's wishes, private services will be held at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Clement's Cemetery, Bankston.

He was born on June 30, 1934, on Hickory Valley Farm near Dyersville, son of William and Monica (Gaul) Engelken. He received his education at the Hickory Valley rural schools in the Dyersville area and at St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville.

He married Mary Lou Goedken on May 24, 1956, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg.

Elmer enjoyed farming, attending flea markets, visiting with people and especially enjoyed going to sale barns.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou Engelken, of Bankston; six children, Mike Engelken and Randy Engelken, both of Bankston, Mary Sue "Susie" Wolf, of Monroe, Wis., Rose (Darrell) Tucker, of Worthington, Julie (Donnie) Vorwald, of Holy Cross, and Jim (Pam) Engelken, of Dubuque; 14 grandchildren, Matt (fiancee, Melanie Moorman) Engelken, Tammy (special friend, Brad Schaul) Engelken, Bruce Engelken, Kelly (friend, Craig Vaske) Engelken, Kevin Tucker, Laura Tucker, Lisa Tucker, Cody Wolf, Travis Wolf, Kaitlyn Engelken, Jessa Engelken, Lindsey Engelken, Samuel Vorwald and Luke Vorwald; a great-grandchild, Katelyn; a sister, Alma Brehm, of Worthington; four brothers, Edwin (Althea) Engelken, of Dyersville, Julius (Irene) Engelken, of Earlville, George (Sherry) Engelken, of Atlanta, Ga., and Cletus (Arlene) Engelken of Dyersville; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother-in-law, William (Calista) Goedken; and a brother-in-law, Charles Brehm.

An Elmer L. Engelken Memorial Fund has been established.
