Joan M. "Joanie" Connolly, 69, of 3025 Hillcrest Road, died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 6 p.m.

She was born on Dec. 20, 1931, in Dubuque County, daughter of Cletus and Marcella (Powers) Connolly.

Her teaching career spanned 47 years from a one-room school house to her retirement from Table Mound School in June 1997, and covered three generations of students.

She graduated from the former St. Columbkille's High School, class of 1949, and received her bachelor of arts and master's degrees from Clarke College. She was an active member of St. Columbkille's Parish, Iowa State Education Association and was involved with AA for many years. She also received many teaching awards including the Golden Apple Award at her retirement.

Surviving are a brother, Cletus "Junior" (Geri) Connolly, of Dubuque; two sisters, Mary (Pat) Noonan, of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Rosie (Bob) Carr, of Dubuque; nieces and nephews, Mike Connolly, Cathy McCullough, Bob Connolly, Diane Pancratz, Bill Connolly, Susan Connolly, Kevin Noonan, Steve Noonan, Sean Noonan, Tim Carr, Mark Carr and Kim Carr; 23 great-nieces and nephews; and many friends who she dearly loved.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Joan M. "Joanie" Connolly Memorial Fund has been established.

Her family and friends and teaching were the love of Joanie's life.
