Alvina Elizabeth Connolly, 81, of 1940 Ungs St., died suddenly Sunday, May 11, 2008, at home.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 15, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, New Melleray, rural Peosta, Iowa. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St.

She was born on Feb. 25, 1927, in Orleans, Neb., daughter of Albert and Louise (Gilles) Berendes. She attended St. Joseph's School in Bellevue, Iowa. She married Roger Joseph Connolly on Aug. 9, 1958, at St. Raphael's Cathedral; he preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 2006.

Alvina worked at Interstate Power Co. from 1958 to 1961, until the birth of her son, Patrick. She went back to work when her children went off to school for Dr. Sol Tabak and the Dubuque Optometric Center for more than 20 years. She also worked at Linwood Cemetery and the Dubuque Historical Society until her retirement in 2002.

Alvina enjoyed all types of crafts and cake decorating. She was known to bake and decorate cakes and give them as gifts. Alvina and Roger loved to travel and took many trips together.

Surviving are a son, Patrick J. (Kathy) Connolly, of Dubuque; a daughter, Peggy M. Connolly, of Dubuque; a granddaughter, Nicole A. Connolly, of Dubuque; a niece, Suzanne (James) Bausch, of Wildwood, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Mary (Ron) Hagensten, of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Carol (Don) Lambert, of Dubuque.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; five siblings, one in infancy, Mildred and Paul, who died as youngsters in a tornado in 1921, Delores Barton and Robert Berendes.

An Alvina E. Connolly Memorial Fund has been established.
