Thomas J. Schwendinger

EPWORTH, Iowa -- Thomas J. Schwendinger, 42, of Epworth died at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 1989, at Peoples Memorial hospital, Independence, of an apparent heart attack while pheasant hunting.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic church, Epworth, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Behr Funeral home, 1491 Main St., Dubuque, where the parish wake service will be said at 7:30 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus Council 7823, of Epworth will say the rosary at 8 p.m.

Mr. Schwendinger worked for the Telegraph Herald for 24 years and was the mailroom manager.

He was born on March 24, 1947, in Dubuque, son of Paul and Eleanor (Becker) Schwendinger. He married Karen R. Burkart on July 12, 1969, at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque; she survives.

He was a Vietnam War Army veteran; a member and grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, Council 7823, of Epworth; and a member of the Dubuque Chapter of Pheasant Forever. He was an ardent sportsman.

Also surviving are two daughters, Lisa Schwendinger of Cedar Falls and Lora Schwendinger at home; two sons, Jason and Matthew Schwendinger, both at home; his parents, Paul and Eleanor Schwendinger of Peosta; five sisters, Kathleen Schwendinger of Silver Springs, Ark., Mrs. Merlin (Carol) Timmerman of Galena, Ill., Mrs. Rudy (Pat) Weber of Sherrill, Mrs. LaVerne (Josephine) Fehring of Carroll and Mrs. Dennis (Donna) Gotto of Epworth and six brothers, Paul Schwendinger of Guttenberg, James Schwendinger of Little Falls, Minn., Ronald Schwendinger of Dubuque, Anthony Schwendinger of Waukon, Robert Schwendinger of Epworth and Joseph Schwendinger of Marquette.

A Thomas J. Schwendinger Memorial Fund has been established.
