Adel E. Wels, 103, of Cedar Ridge Road, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Dubuque Retirement Community.

In keeping with her wishes, private family services will be held at a later date. Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Dec. 17, 1909, below Durango, Iowa, and moved to the farm on Cedar Ridge Road with her parents, Ed and Clara (Parker) Wels, in 1916. She lived on this farm for more than 90 years, always referring to Cedar Ridge as "a little bit of heaven."

Adel graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1929. She worked at Roshek's until deciding to help on the farm on Cedar Ridge.

She was a lifelong member of Asbury Methodist Church.

After her parents were gone, Adel continued to run the farm, interacting with many farmers who would rent the farmland and spending many hours maintaining the fences. She and her sister, Marie Coates, had a combined farm sale, at which time Adel then moved to Dubuque Retirement Community, where she resided for five years.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her sister, Marie Coates, of Dubuque; and three nieces, Elaine (Paul) Greene, of Menasha, Wis., Bonnie Schmitt and Linda (Glen) Mullen, both of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Clara (Parker) Wels; nephew-in-law, Jim Schmitt; and nephew, Douglas Coates.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Grand View United Methodist Church, 3342 John Wesley Drive, Dubuque, IA 52002.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hoffmannschneiderfuneralhomes.com.

The family of Adel wants to extend a special

thank-you to the staff at Dubuque Retirement Community for their kindness and unending care always, but especially during the last few weeks, and to Hospice of Dubuque, which was so helpful in the short time they knew Adel.
