Fredrick J. "Fred" Zoller, 84, of Dubuque, passed away at 7 a.m., Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Luther Manor of natural causes.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

Fred was born on Oct. 8, 1929, in Cascade, Iowa, son of Charles and Mae (Kurt) Zoller.

Fred served in the Army and was stationed at a discharged from the Army, he and his brother hospital in occupied Japan. After he was attended school in Galesburg, Ill., where they learned to fly and repair airplanes. After becoming a licensed pilot and mechanic, Fred then joined the Air Force, working on aircraft during the Korean conflict. After he was discharged, Fred then went to work at the Dubuque Regional Airport as a mechanic and inspector. Fred later went to school in Chicago and Minneapolis and became certified by Thermoking and Carrier to maintain refrigeration units. He then went to work as a private contractor, taking care of reefer maintenance at the Dubuque Packing Co., until his retirement.

In his free time, Fred enjoyed flying airplanes, working on old cars and taking trips to the Indianapolis 500 with his friends.

Fred is survived by his sister, Carolyn (Noel) Hird, of Bella Vista, Ariz.; his niece and caretaker, Nancy (Harley) Troester, of Dickeyville, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Lloyd, Joed, Donald and Vernon; and his sisters, Dorothy and Marjorie.
