CASCADE, Iowa - Joseph A. Althoff, 81, 313 Third Ave. N.W., Apt. 4, Cascade, died at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 1995, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cascade. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Post 528, of Cascade. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be a scripture wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mr. Althoff owned and operated A&D Oil Co., Cascade, until his retirement in 1983. He then farmed in the rural Cascade area.

He was born on May 10, 1914, in Cascade, son of Theodore and Mary (Mensen) Althoff. He married Edna Mae Hemmer on Aug. 20, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cascade; she died on May 24, 1975.

He received his education in the rural country schools in the Cascade area and at the former St. Mary's School, Cascade. He was a World War II Navy veteran and was a member of St. Matthias Parish, Cascade, and the American Legion, Post 528, of Cascade.

His family was his greatest joy, especially his grandchildren. His favorite pastimes were gardening and working around his farm.

Surviving are two sons, John (and Mary Beth) Althoff, of Cascade, and Kevin (and Karen) Althoff, of Farley; two daughters, Lois Felton, of Cascade, and Marilyn (and Richard) Shankland, of Gladstone, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Heid, of Dyersville.

He also was preceded in death by a grandson, Thomas J. Shankland; his parents; four brothers; and two sisters.

A Joseph A. Althoff Memorial Fund has been established.
