Edward Etting Deckert, 69, of 258 Bluff St., died Saturday, March 5, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Memorial services will be held at a later date at First Congregational United Church of Christ. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on April 2, 1941, in Dubuque, son of Donald Elwell and Mildred (Felderman) Deckert. He attended Dubuque Senior High School, Grinnell College and received his Ph.D. in modern history from the University of Iowa.

Edward was a free-lance writer and independent researcher who had published numerous articles on American history.

He was a member of Mosaic Lodge 125 AF&AM and an honorary member of High Twelve International. He also was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Surviving are two sisters, Jean (Dennis) Perri, of Grinnell, Iowa, and Jan (Kenneth) Richter, of Tulsa, Okla.; and a brother, George Deckert, of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, William Deckert.

Memorials may be given to First Congregational United Church of Christ.
