Mrs. Carl F. (Mildred E.) Bartels, 95, of Luther Manor apartments, formerly of 1550 Alta Place, died at 11:20 p.m. Monday, May 4, 1998, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with burial in Center Grove Methodist Cemetery. Friends may call after noon Saturday at the church. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on May 12, 1902, in Montrose, S.D., daughter of Edith and Edward Azeltine.

She attended Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, and Iowa State College, which is now Iowa State University, in Ames.

She taught in public schools in Clear Lake, Iowa.

She married Carl F. Bartels on Nov. 25, 1926, in Lakeland, Fla.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she served on the board of deacons as a church schoolteacher. She served on the American Cancer Society Board, the Order of the Rainbow Board, the Dubuque Girl Scouts Council, and organized the first Brownie Troop in Dubuque. She was a member of PEO Sisterhood, Chapter IP, a 50-year member of the O.E.S., Dubuque Women's club, Dubuque Art Association, Tri-State Genealogical Society, MacDougal Clan of America, and Julien Dubuque Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, in which she served as chapter regent and was elected state regent of ISDAR. She was a member of the Magna Chapter Dames of America, the Colonial Dames of America and was elected president of the Iowa Chapter XVI. She also was a member of the Dubuque Golf and Country Club.

Mildred and Carl went dancing every Saturday evening. She enjoyed poetry, bridge, Bible study and reading, and had recently written her memoirs. She cherished her many friends. Mildred dearly loved her daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and their families. Following the death of her husband in 1987, she moved into Luther Manor apartments. Mildred remarked "If I had not moved to Luther Manor apartments, I would never have met all these wonderful people."

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Beverly (James) Treneman, of McMinnville, Ore., Mrs. Nancy (Richard) Wendt, of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Mrs. Carole (Richard) Loetscher, of Dubuque; 12 grandchildren, Mark (Karen) Wendt, Rod (Carol) Wendt, Michael (Pam) Wendt, Ann Treneman, Nancy (Rolando) Mendez-Treneman, Joan (Chris) Horton, Mary (Kurt) Thiessen, John (Donna) Wetter, Penny (Art) Gilloon, Dr. Andrew Loetscher, Toby (Janann) Loetscher and Dr. Sara Loetscher; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sara Suzanne Wetter on May 3, 1958; and her husband, Carl F. Bartels on Jan. 9, 1987.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Luther Manor and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
