AN OLD RESIDENT
DIES IN ST. PAUL
~
SAMUEL UPTON PASSES AWAY
AFTER AN ILLNESS OF
A YEAR
~
Samuel Upton, an old well known resident of Dubuque, died at Monday last at the home of his daughter Mrs. J. Nairn, in St. Paul, aged 73 years. He had been in ill health with Bright’s disease, for the past two years, at the time of his demise was under the care of his son, Dr. Charles Upton. He received the best of care, but the disease had such a hold on him that it could not be broken, and he passed to his reward.

Samuel Upton was born in Lincolnshire, England, and came to Dubuque in 1847, residing here ever since, with the exception of the past year, during which he was in St. Paul. Mr. Upton was an active and energetic man, and, in the early days was one of Dubuque’s prominent citizens. For thirty years he conducted the leading restaurant in Dubuque, and it was frequented by the leading citizens, and many notable banquets were held there. He served as deputy marshal under Marshall “Jake” Swivel, and was a most competent and faithful officer. He retired from business several years ago.

Mr. Upton was a man of even temperament and no one ever saw him but in a good natured mood. He is all that is to be found in the man of honor and integrity, and leaves behind a family who are an honor to him. His old neighbors and friends of over fifty years in Dubuque will learn of his demise with deep regret.

He is survived by four sons, William of Santa Rosa, Cal., Wallie, the well known laundry man; George who holds a responsible position with the Baltimore & Ohio Railway Company in Chicago; Dr. Charles Upton of St. Paul; and two daughters, Mrs. J. W. Nairn of St. Paul and Mrs. H. H. Thompson of Pittsburg, Pa.

Mr. Upton was a member of Harmony Lodge, 1. O. O. F., and was an Old Fellow for forty- nine years, being one of, if no the oldest, member of the order in Iowa. The remains arrived here this morning, and the funeral took place at 3:30 this afternoon, under the auspices of Harmony Lodge, the internment being in Linwood Cemetery. The attendance was large.
