PIONEER CITIZEN HAS
PASSED AWAY
~
HENRY WUNDERLICH EXPIRED
SUNDAY AFTER A LONG
ILLNESS
~
Henry Wunderlich, one of the cities pioneer citizens, died at the family residence, 951 White Street, at 9 o’clock Sunday morning, after an illness that confined him to his home for the past seven weeks.

Mr. Wunderlich was born in Plauen, Saxony, Germany, on the 31st of August, 1836. He spent his early life in his native land and received a superior musical education in Leipsich. He came to this country while still a young man and settled in this city in 1855. During his first years of residence in this city, Mr. Wunderlich was considered one of the foremost musicians of this country. For the past ten or fifteen years he has been associated with the Grand Opera House orchestra, more for the pleasure he experienced in the music then for any other reason. In 1857, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Ernst, who survives him.

For the past thirty-eight years Mr. Wunderlich had been connected with the furniture business, for thirty-three years having been the president of the Dubuque Cabinet Makers Association. Four years ago he engaged in business for himself under the firm name of H. Wunderlich & Son. His business house was one of the largest in the state, and he was considered one of the leading merchants of this city.

Mr. Wunderlich was one of Dubuque’s pioneer sons and was considered one of her leading citizens. He was a public spirited man and was ever interested in the growth of the city. Ever willing to lend a helping hand, Mr. Wunderlich was ever ready to lend in all movements in order to be of assistance for his fellowmen and lend aid to those lest fortunate than him. He was gentle, kindly man, generous, and above all a manly man devoted to his home and family and one of the most genial of men among his fellow men. His career in this city was marked with honor and his death removed from Dubuque circles one of her most honored citizens and esteemed sons.

In life Mr. Wunderlich was never esteemed, in death his memory will remain forever honored. His passing from the realms of men and his transition to the silent shadowland removes from those who knew him, respected him, and ever held him in the highest regards, a man of noble life and tireless integrity, but all his memory will remain an example of all that was manly and his death will be universally mourned.

Mr. Wunderlich is survived by his wife and five children, viz., George W. and Henry J. of Dubuque, Mrs. F. Rust of Milwaukee, Mrs. F. F. Connor of San Francisco and Harry W. of Chicago.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday afternoon from the late residence at 2 o’clock. In the absence of Rev. Sage, Rev. Morrow, the curate of St. John’s Church, will officiate. The body will be laid at Linwood.
