Dubuque Daily Times-Journal, January 20, 1907

Mrs. Mary Hagerty, one of Dubuque's most estimable pioneers. passed away Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock after an illness of several weeks. She was born at Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland, May 15, 1836, and emigrated to America in infancy with her parents who lived in Boston until they came to the west about fifty years ago. She was married in 1854 to James F. Hagerty, one of the prominent river captains in the early days and was left a widow many years ago.

She is survived by Drs. H. J. and R. E. and H. S. of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Gussie and Carrie, also her brothers, James and Thomas O'Connor, and one sister, Mrs. Katherine Hanly, of Stillwater, Minnesota.

Mrs. Hagerty was a Christian in the highest sense of the word, a woman of the most sterling traits of character, possessing a strong, keen mind, a powerful will, inflexible on questions pf principle, but ever ready to listen to the dictates of reason and a generous heart, which always prompted her to deeds of kindness. Words are entirely inadequate to express a eulogy on a life which required an intimate acquaintance to appreciate fully. The time of the funeral will be announced later.
