THE LIST GROWING
~
James Mullen, of West Dubuque
~
Last night at 9:20 o’clock, James Mullen, of West Dubuque, one of Dubuque’s oldest pioneers, passed away.

He was taken seriously ill about two weeks ago, and Sunday everything indicated that the end was near. He received the last sacrament of the church Sunday night, and was unconscious all day yesterday until death came at the hour stated.

He came here from Londonberry, Ireland, in 1844, with his brother Cornelius Mullen, deceased. They entered the land on which the homestead now stands, and the land opposite, on which is erected the new insane asylum.

He was 78 years of age, and leaves a wife and nine children. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock with burial in Key West.

It will be remembered by the older residents that in 1879 he was attacked by Josh Ogelsby, who had just returned from the asylum at Independence, and who had a fancied grievance against Mullen. Olglesby fired six bullets into Mullen’s body. The latter’s life was in balance for two weeks, and then he began to mend, and shortly afterwards had apparently recovered.
